Marco Grassi was born in Pavia, Italy, in 1976. After attending Liceo di Broni and Collegio Ghislieri, he graduated in Electronic Engineering (M.Sc.) at University of Pavia in 2002 with a final mark of 110/110, and pursued the Ph.D. degree in Industrial and Information Engineering in 2006. During 2001 he has been with Texas Instruments Inc., Dallas, as intern undergraduate fellow in the Data Converters Group and since 2002 he has been with the Integrated Microsystems Laboratory (IMS) of the Electronics Department of University of Pavia, where he participated in high resolution and high speed mixed-signal circuits design and characterization. Since 2004 the research activity of Marco Grassi mainly turned its focus towards smart sensor interfaces, in particular for tin-oxide based gas sensors electronic noses. In this research area he participated at three national projects (PRIN) and at related European Network (GOSPEL) activities. He also worked on Large Format X-Ray Detector Read-Out for space applications ASICs within an ESA/Thales agreement in different design/characterization sessions. Since 2007, as Research Associate at the Sensors and Microsystems Laboratory (SMS) of the Electrical Engineering Department of University of Pavia, he is also involved in healthcare and homeland safety technology solutions with particular focus on Ambient Assisted Living (AAL). Such activities have been mainly carried out within Netcarity alliance, for which in 2008 he also contributed to the consortium training about Communication Technology and within other European AAL emerging consortia. He has been involved in the design of very low power MEMS pressure/acoustic/acceleration sensors read-out integrated circuits in cooperation with different microelectronics companies (Sensirion, Epcos - TDK, ST) and supervised the design of very low power (cycle-based) algorithmic ADCs for sensors. Currently he is engineering a multisensory system for food quality certification, a precision voltage reference and a X-Ray Silicon Drift Chamber (SDC) detector interface. Latest research activities are also in the energy harvesting field (magnetic/solar/thermoelectric) with particular focus on multi-source related power management for AAL, sports and healthcare applications. Marco Grassi has been Teaching Assistant of Mechanical and Thermal Measurements in 2011 and of Electrical Measurements in 2012. He is a member of IEEE since 2004 and reviewer of IEEE Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement journal since 2007. MG is also associated to Electrical and Electronic Measurements Group (GMEE) and to Audio Engineering Society (AES). He is author of 80 publications: 4 book chapters, 11 papers published in International Journals, 41 papers presented at International Conferences, 6 short-chapter contributions, and 18 specific Measurements/AAL Congress works with published proceedings. He received the best oral presentation award at AISEM 2009 and has been supervisor assistant in 11 MS/Ph.D. Thesis Works. Marco Grassi has been temporary manager for Solid State Arts industrial project and TPC member of ForitAAL congress in 2010, being instead Chairman of different IEEE Sensors Conference Sessions in 2011. He is University of Pavia Campus Post-Docs Delegate since 2011, principal consultant at emerging Microelectronics Company since 2012, and TPC member of PRIME 2013. Since 2014 Marco Grassi works on very high efficiency (99%) capacitive power converters for Semitrex, Laguna Beach, audio bandwidth data converters in scaled and ultra-scaled technologies and on several on-demand projects from worldwide semiconductor companies.
